Trialling “The Little Black Book”

Good Morning Everyone!

So, I succumbed to the charms of the Moleskine Notebook.

Traveler’s Notebook and Filofax users, please don’t be disheartened – I haven’t left you! I’m just trying new ways to streamline things.  See, this is the problem.  I want EVERYTHING together – my calendar, my bills information, my cash envelope system, a place to keep receipts, my passwords, my cards, my notes, my spending tracker… it’s proving to be rather difficult!

The Midori Regular was perhaps the closest I could get to what I wanted. But it was NOT streamlining at all, it was heavier, bulkier, and I couldn’t even fit my notes notebook into the elastics as it was so full!

Next was the Midori Passport – which was actually perfect… for my cash envelope system, and as a basic purse/wallet function.  But I couldn ‘t carry my notebooks with me.  I got a lot of compliments on the Passport whenever I went to stores – nobody had ever seen a purse/wallet like it.  I’d hold up the queues explaining the brand and that it was primarily used as a notebook but you could switch up the inserts and completely customise to meet your requirements.

I was browsing Pinterest for more information on the Traveler’s Notebooks and how others utilized their Traveler’s Notebooks – call me curious, but I get so many ideas from others, and I customize them to suit my needs. One thing that had been grabbing my attention for a while was this thing called a Moleskine.  Sure, I’d seen these overpriced notebooks in the likes of Paperchase, WHSmith and Waterstones, but I just couldn’t justify spending over £10 on a notebook.  Sure, they have diaries, but they also have blank, sketch, lined, dot and grid paper too.  The things some of the more creative people had done with their Moleskines had me lost for words.  There are many, many talented people out there.  I wanted in!

I thought long and hard, and came across a web page documenting how to create credit card inserts to place on a page in a Moleskine (or any other notebook). I wondered if I could do a similar thing but over 2 pages of a pocket size, to create the cash envelope system.  But I’m a very curious cat… so instead of thinking very long, I bit the bullet, jumped in my car and shot over to my local shopping centre.

I purchased my pocket blank notebook for £9.99 in Waterstones. I decided on the blank because it meant that I could use the book for anything I wanted – I could create a calendar, I could doodle, write notes, create templates, glue things in… basically I could freestyle whatever I needed to.

I had also read that the “unofficial” pen of the Moleskine was the Pilot G2, which I found in Paperchase also. In fact, I found the mini/pocket size.  I purchased a black and blue.

Getting back home, I sat at my table and looked a bit daunted at the prospect of having to completely begin from scratch.

The first thing I wanted was to put the cash envelope system to use. I cut the back of my required amount of envelopes off and left a little lip to glue onto the pages, staggering each one slightly lower until they filled the pages.

Next, I needed a pen loop. I ripped an elasticated pen loop from and old La-De-Dah scrapbook that I’d never used and pretty much just taped it into the back of the book.

image.jpg

I placed a 2016 year overview calendar, a pocket size printable taken from Wendaful Designs printed out and glued into the book.

image.jpg

Then I started working on the calendar. I decided I only wanted one for the next few months, as who knows, by the new year I might be using something else, or I may have stuck to the Moleskine, loved it so much and need a new one!

In the calendar, I wrote my monthly bills in the dates they were due to come out of my account, I wrote any social events, holiday days, days my manager was not in the office, appointments and general things to remember. I colour code highlighting these events.

image.jpg

After the calendar, I glued my monthly bills excel tracker in. Then I added tabs using labels that I’d got left over.  Got a sharpie marker and coloured the labels in black, then used a white gel pen to draw tiny little symbols to notify me what section is where.

image

After all of that, I felt that the book was a little too “serious” still, and needed to inject a bit of colour, a bit of “me” into the whole thing.

So, this is where my Pinterest and Google searches came in handy. I’m a lover of anything vintage inspired, or anything whimsical, dreamy, bohemian.  They are my favorite type of photographs I love searching for, looking at and wishing I could take a photograph just as fantastic.

image.jpg

I printed out a lot of photographs found mostly on google, creating photo collages and printing on normal printer paper to keep the book thin, and then cutting out and affixing to the pages using corner adhesives I’d purchased from Paperchase. I also used a photograph on the front of the notebook to give it a more personal touch.

image

I’m not finished with the set up yet – I need to create an template and an area for writing out my spending and tabbing out dedicated sections for that and my notes etc…

All in all, I’m really happy with the notebook so far – it’s small, it’s thin, it’s portable, it’s sleek, it looks pretty cool, it holds almost everything I need (I just need to find somewhere to hold my cards still as I’m unsure that the Moleskine will still be as neat with 10+ cards in…)

The paper feels sublime, very smooth and easy to write on – I love the cream colour of the pages, and the cover feels soft and slightly grained, very tactile! I chose the non-hard cover as I wanted the cover to be able to mould to the shape of the book and get that thumbed through, weathered appearance rather than it being rigid.

I’ve been using this system for almost a week, and while it’s early days, I get really excited when I have to pen an appointment in or take it out for “something”. The only thing I am a little more “shy” about is taking it out for my money at the cash registers.  There is every possibility that I may need to remove my envelope system back into my Mulberry purse/wallet…

The planner peace continues!

Have you ever used a Moleskine to plan/track/place notes/journal/as a purse (wallet) before?

Filofax Week on 2 Pages Inserts

Hi everyone

Last night I tweaked my Month on 2 Pages and made it available on my Free Inserts page (see above). The more I looked at it, the more I wanted to have a go at a Week on 2 Pages also.

You may have seen the way I like to organise my diary (fill in monthly pages and then move the detail across to the inner section of my weekly pages, with the outer half free to put in to do lists). It’s just something that works for me, but if you feel like trying something like it, the Week on 2 Pages are now available on my Free Inserts page also. Please see below for photo’s:

20131013-172029.jpg

That is the blank page as it comes off the printer.

Here is how it can look when decorated:

20131013-172305.jpg

Course, my decorating is a little boring etc, but I’m just trying to get the point across that the pages can be jazzed up to your own taste etc.

Anyhow, they’re there for the taking if you feel the need to have a go 🙂

Let me know how you get on!

Filofax Custom Today Markers

Good Morning!

UK Peeps, not to put a downer on us or anything, but did you know yesterday was the last Bank Holiday until Christmas now? But of course you did: we are an organised bunch of people, you’d probably known that at the start of the year unlike me, who discovered this depressing fact at 6am this morning just as I woke.

I was in such a hurry to post and get to bed last night that I forgot to post my net Today Markers… Which were made from the “Inserts” of the Smash range. To me, the whole range creates nostalgia within me: of schooldays and preparing for my first day back in September. I would spend ages in the likes of WHSmith wanting products I didn’t have the pocket money for (notably, that Sheep folder everyone seemed to have… You know the one: the badly drawn sheep that covered the entire 2 ring A4 binder on a bright yellow background? And it didn’t stop there: they had pencils, erasers, notebooks etc all in that design. I’m pretty sure they did a cow too…!) with my friends.

I think the Smash range would look amazing in one of those cute School Exercise Book type Filofaxes!

Anyway: here you go 🙂

20130827-074753.jpg

The above is my Month to View page marker. You’ll notice that my month is colour coded (I finally succumbed!) and the key is in the notes section on the far right hand side.

20130827-074951.jpg

I’ve added washi tape on my week to view page marker. The washi tape is full of “fab, want it, need it, love it” etc phrases with arrows… So much fun!

I’m trying to incorporate the same kind of colour coding system into my weekly pages (only in the blank areas closest to my page marker, not in the to do list in the line and check box areas. I’ve attached the code on the marker.

20130827-075335.jpg

There we have it! I have finally found the perfect set up for me 🙂 and about time, too!

Hope you have a great day!

Filofax & Smash Products

Hi everyone!

Quick update today: I popped to my local hobbycraft today as I had seen a line of really really funky stationery called “Smash”… And I had to have a go at using a couple of bits and bobs of theirs in my Filofax.

Since my dividers have been a little bland and boring lately and a few of them were “redundant” due to my work role changing from external to internal, I had been meaning to change some of the dividers when I got around to it.

I decided I should have a new change around as well as new dividers etc. Well, you know what I’m like, constantly changing stuff!

Here are my new dividers!

I apologise for my rushed camerawork: it’s late at night and I’d been working 7 hours on these dividers (crazy, huh??)

I also apologise for my awful handwriting, but I wanted it to look more of a scrappy feel and extremely personal.

So there we are… I’m ready to step into Autumn with my new updated and revised dividers… Have you updated yours recently?

Catch you later!

Inside My Filofax Personal Osterley (Ozzie)

Hi Everyone!

As promised I finally took a few photo’s of what is inside my Orange Osterley.  Now, I’m not saying my setup is the best in the world, and I’m continuously tweaking it etc, but at the moment it’s sort of working for me…

Originally I did a video but I ballsed up again and again so decided I’m so much better when I don’t have a video/webcam going and I’m all flustered!

So lets get started!  When I open my Filofax, here is the first thing I see:

Image

In the pockets I have a few cards I hardly ever use but are there “just in case”, my free carwash vouchers (yep, I can get my car washed every month for free until May next year!), I have the little sticky note that Stefanie sent with Ozzie to remind me where he came from and how happy I was when I received him (and all of the gifts that arrived with him!).  Behind that are cards that I randomly pick up with social events on that I might go to.

The cover of the first section is taken from the “First Edition Paper – Desert Blooms” 8×8 Premium Pad” (http://www.craftydevilspapercraft.co.uk/first-edition-8-x-8-paper-pad-desert-bloom.ir?cName=card-making-paper-and-card-paper-packs) that I cut a slot for the Organiser Number and laminated.  I like this design as it has a beautiful but laid back glitter effect.

Image

And there is the usual Filofax Organiser page.  So bland and boring 😦

Behind the boring and necessary registration page I have made my own Personal Information Section as I thought the original Filofax one was bland and boring – of course, I’ve had to cover personal details, but here you get the idea:

Image

The next page shows all of my direct debits/bills each month – including my account/policy numbers, renewal dates, date my DD goes out each month and amount of the monthly bill:

ImageIMG_1330

The next Tab (above) is my “Month Planner” Top Tab which card is also taken from the Desert Blooms Range.

At a glance I can see what my Month looks like (which looks pretty bland this month!)

IMG_1331

This was printed and taken from Ray and Steve’s collection, but I printed it from Ray’s Page direct:  (My Life All In One Place), here is the link direct to the pages I used: https://app.box.com/s/ng8zsjp3ypvn9puqnm0c (Ray, if this is something I’m my supposed to do, my apologies, please let me know straight away and I’ll take it down – I’m afraid I’m not familiar with “The Rules” of sharing other’s information! – PS, I LOVE Your Pages!)

This is what a “non decorated page” looks like:

IMG_1332

My next section is my Diary tab, which is a side tab and taken from the Desert Blooms Cardstock once again:

IMG_1333

Now, when I started out using a Filofax (1 year ago this month!) I had my Pocket Lavender Metropol and the standard week on 2 pages.  With my Sales Rep job I needed something with appointment times so moved on to 1 day per page WHSmith’s Refill’s with Appointment Times… and now that I’ve moved more into the office, I decided to play around with another layout:

IMG_1334

This one was taken from the Philofaxy Site – and the direct link to this insert is here – http://philofaxy.com/inserts/Personal_Week_Per_Page/2014_merged_weekperpage_plusnotes_personal_print.pdf

I downloaded the source files and tinkered with the layout as I am on a Mac and don’t have Office – I use a package called OpenOffice instead, so things never seem to look the same in OpenOffice and require re-jigging before printing.  I changed the font and a couple of bits and bobs, added some lines in…  but it was too plain and I couldn’t seem to jazz it up no matter how much I loved the layout.  I just couldn’t seem to stick with it – and so after 4 weeks of pondering how to spruce up my diary pages… I looked at my trusty original week on 2 pages that came with my planner… and here…

IMG_1335

You can see how within one week I’ve begun to actually have a “system” – from writing aimlessly everywhere to dividing up the page into task/to do area and note/appointment area.  I was inspired to do this after watching this video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=503eUcse67s by LovelyOrganisedLife.

After that, I found this amazing Washi-Tape –  http://www.maigocute.com/products/cat-to-do-list-funtape-washi-tape#.UhdIcxZ_Lvw – isn’t it ADORABLE?  But the height is too tall for my daily spaces :(.

What I like about this new set up is that I can have my page marker on the page and it will still show my tasks:

IMG_1337

The bookmarks are also made by myself and laminated – they are also taken from the Desert Blooms Cardstock!

Anyway… moving on…

My next section is my Contacts section with a side tab.  Card taken from the Desert Blooms once again:

IMG_1338

As my work contacts are in my Breast Cancer Campaign Filofax (with business cards also), this section is purely for personal family/friends/services (Dr, Dentist, Hairdressers, Beautician etc!).

IMG_1339

This section was taken from the Philofaxy website and I modified the font.  I did try removing the web blog and twitter rows but my Open Office went a bit crazy… so I’ve had to leave them in 😉 – http://www.philofaxy.com/files/PersonalAddress.pdf

Next section is my Travel Section.  As I used to be a Sales Rep on the road a lot, I needed to know the area’s I was travelling to and what area’s were en-route just in case I was passing one of my customers on the way there or back to pop in quickly.  It also helped navigate me from Kent back towards Birmingham when my in car phone charger broke and my battery drained from using the iphone sat nav app!  I’m thinking of removing this tab and replacing it with something else… but for now:

IMG_1340

It’s another side tab and taken from the Desert Blooms Range (yet again… see a pattern forming here?  I have loads of other pads but I keep going back to this one…!)

IMG_1341IMG_1342

I have no idea why I have the London Tube Map in here, but it reminds me of the only time I ever went to London (back in 2009 for a work course – I saw nothing of London at all!).  But you never know when you might need it!

My next section is my Expenses side tab, on cardstock taken from the First Edition Paper – Boho Chic 8 x 8 Premium Paper Pad:

IMG_1343

It’s another of those sections I set up purely for my Sales Rep Role and now I’m mostly office based, it’s not really required or used anymore.

IMG_1344

It’s an Australian 5 dollar note that I’ve printed out and folded up, laminated and slit the area so that I can pop receipts in.

My next area is another side tab called Reports, the card is taken from the Boho Chic range and it’s yet another redundant area that was mainly used when I was in my Sales Rep role to report on my visits to customers.

IMG_1345

Instead of my previous inserts, I have printed out another of the Philofaxy inserts – http://www.philofaxy.com/files/PersonalMeeting.pdf

IMG_1346

Again I changed the font to my own preference…

My next section is a tab that I use so often it’s scary!  It’s a side tab called Passwords, and it’s on Desert Blooms card:

IMG_1347

My Passwords inserts were actually just Philofaxy Address inserts but rows removed and renamed:

IMG_1348

I never write my actual password, just a clue as to what it is.

My final tab is a side tab by the name of Missy – really it’s just a goals section but I have a thing about naming things and I’m very visual.  So Missy is basically the better version of myself with all of my goals completed!

IMG_1349

In this section I have a few pages that make me – ME, my likes and my weight – just little reminders if I ever forget 😉

IMG_1350

I’m attempting to lose weight so this is perfect for when I need to keep a careful eye on my scales.

IMG_1351

My dream car… (oh and my little blue Fox Bookmark I made – to make yours, go here – http://www.lonnies.dk/2012/08/printables-foxy-bookmarks/IMG_1352

Things I want to change about my set up…

IMG_1353 IMG_1354

Music that makes me – ME 🙂 – notice the little musical washi tape?  So cute!

IMG_1355IMG_1356

The world washi tape showing where I want to go abroad and where I’ve been (not many places unfortunately!)

IMG_1357 IMG_1358

My favourite films that I enjoyed watching (for whatever reasons – nostalgia, style, storyline, etc)

IMG_1359 IMG_1360

At the back of the binder I have a notebook (which was a RAK to me) covered with fabric washi tape (which is again, another RAK!) where I can jot idea’s or quotes or anything I might want to reference later on – behind it I have a postcard with surf boards on it, and when you flip to the back of the notebook to expose the bider, you see I have a couple of business cards and some much needed ibuprofen (400mg)!

I don’t use the back pen loop as it tends to bend my tabs (despite them being the same size as Filofax ones!)  so I’ve taped the pen loop down and only use the front one (which if fine by me as I’m left handed!) as it tends not to mess with my tabs at all.

Well, that’s the tour of my Filofax!  Hope you enjoyed it – any suggestions are extremely welcome 🙂

Catch you later

The Filofax & Weight Tracking

Hi Everyone!

Last night I decided I was fed up using my iPhone to record my weight. To use the app I had, I needed to convert my stone to lbs, which was really annoying at best since I work and can easily understand stones.

I scoured the Philofaxy website for some kind of weight management tracker but to no avail – i could see the Weightwat hers meal records etc but no weight charts. being the visual person i am, i really needed something to look at so I considered requesting a template to be drawn up. Then something stopped me: why get others to do something that you can do for yourself?

I decided to create an undated weight chart for my filofax instead. Oh goodie! Another reason to open my planner 🙂

I created it in OpenOffice as I have a Mac, then copy and pasted it onto a document blank Filofax personal size paper template, then just printed out! I’ve done about 6 months worth, here’s a page 🙂

20130725-074725.jpg

What do you think? Basic, but it will do the trick… I’m using it already 🙂

What inserts have you made and why?

Filofax Inserts Plan

Good Evening All!

Tomorrow is potentially the biggest day of my life and it’s really difficult to believe that in less than 24 hours time I could be in a completely different chapter of my life.  Of course, I can’t give the game away, but rest assured as soon as I know more about it, I will be really excited in letting the world know all about it too!

My Filofax is keeping me in top shape ready for tomorrow’s news as I prepare myself to be fully focussed and optimistic.  My Appointment times are all filled in with prep tips and just to make sure I don’t forget anything, I’ve even slipped in a little notepaper with bullets detailing items I might forget.

With regards to my inserts, I doodled in my work lunch hour today on the phone to my bestie (who has left her job and is now actively job hunting – which got me reaching for my HOT PINK business address Filofax (reviewed in a previous blog) to see if I could help her out.

Here is what I got:

Image

Obviously there is still a lot to do and a long way to go… and I may change my mind/idea very shortly!

And now…  according to my Filofax I really need to think about gathering my required items ready for tomorrow…!  Wish me luck!
